In this article we will explain the procedure and useful advice for the first activation of a new gas meter. First of all, you need to find out whether the gas meter is already present or whether you need to apply for a new connection.

Case 1: the gas meter is already present

If there is already a gas meter, but it has been sealed by the previous owner, it is necessary to apply for unsealing with the simultaneous change of holder in order to restore the supply. Unblocking a sealed meter usually costs more than simply changing the name.
In any case, it is necessary to contact the supplier you wish to activate by communicating the data of the meter (meter code and number of the reading given at the time of the changeover), the location, the uses of gas (whether only for cooking or also for heating) and the data of the new holder. Obviously, before choosing a new supplier, it is always advisable to do a little research to compare the tariffs available on the market and any offers for new users that would allow significant savings at a time like this when we are facing an increase in raw material prices.

Case 2: the meter is not present

In the case where the meter is not there, it will be necessary to apply for a new connection, which usually has different costs and takes longer than a simple change of owner. In the case of a new connection, in addition to the energy supplier, it will also be necessary to contact the distributor, i.e. the energy company that owns the pipes and which is often, but not always, the same one that delivers and supplies the gas. When applying for the connection of a new meter, there are also various documents required of the new user, who, in addition to the address of the supply and the holder’s data, will also have to provide some more specific and technical documents relating to the house, building permits and the characteristics of the system.

If everything is up to standard, the new meter will be installed within a maximum of one month, but the timeframe could be longer or shorter depending on the complexity of the work required or any problems with the concessions. In any case, when it comes to activating the gas supply, it must always be communicated whether the gas will only be used for domestic use (cooking and domestic hot water) or also for heating the house.

Also in the case of a new connection, it is always useful to make a comparison of the current tariffs by assessing whether there are any offers or ancillary services, such as boiler insurance or a discount on the purchase of a new boiler.
